I was recently commissioned to paint a mural in Downtown Los Angeles. It was not a surprise since we were negotiating and talking over the phone since early February. In late June though, the company representative called me and shared the news that they chose me as the artist to paint their mural. The only condition was to have the mural painted in 6 days.
The deadline was tight and we had agreed to everything over emails. At the moment, I could not go see the walls since I had been working day and night on the AZTLAN Portraits that will be a part of an exhibition in Denver, Colorado opening on August 15th (more info on this soon). For me to go to LA for a day was not a possibility during that time.
So, I had to trust myself and listen to my personal guide Sassafras on this one. I asked him to scout the space for me and if it was a “good” move for me – then I would go forward with the mural agreement.
In a matter of less than 24 hours, everything aligned perfectly. Sassafras gave me the green light and I moved forward with high speed and effortless advancement.
My good friend and fellow artist Codak Smith agreed to assist me with painting the murals so I could meet the deadline on time. He also offered his sacred space as a place I could stay.
On July 10th, I went to my art studio and packed my car with paints and supplies. Irene gave me a bag full of snacks. Then at exactly 4:30am on July 11th, I kissed my girls goodbye as they slept and drove off towards LA.
The 80’x8’ exterior gate is titled: POSITIVITY
And the 20’x14’ roll down door is titled: LIGHT
Thank You Craig, Mike and the rest of the team for this great opportunity. I am truly Grateful.
Thank You Codak Smith for being such an AWESOME friend to me. I cherish and appreciate you.
See you soon Los Angeles!
