Thanks to the cultural connection between Mexico and the United States, Tijuana found itself immersed in break dancing and graffiti during the mid- 1980’s. From that surfaced crews or collectives who were made up of kids who used to claim corners whether it was by selling drugs and/or being affiliated with gang activity. Some of these kids saw something bigger and broader that which was self-expression, brotherhood and a rush of adrenaline only found in graffiti. Because of its addictive properties, some of these kids would bomb or paint throughout the whole city, or as we call it “going all city.”
Established in 1989, the HEM (Hecho En Mexico) crew from Tijuana tagged for identity, bombed for respect and now paints to promote and advocate unity. HEM has evolved into a global graffiti collective with artists from all over Mexico, Switzerland, Spain, Colombia and the United States. Each artist brings their own unique style and personal identity to the crew.
“HEM – El Don del Aguila/The Eagle’s Gift” art exhibition will showcase paintings and photographs from the crew’s active members. Outside of the gallery facing the I-5 freeway, a large-scale mural has been painted by some of the members. We hope you enjoy the exhibition.
