The law is the collection of rules and regulations that governs behavior in a society or country. It is made up of statutes, laws and court decisions. A law is created when a group of people propose, debate and vote on an idea that becomes an official rule, known as legislation or a statute. Laws can be created by Congress, the Supreme Court or any other legislative body.
New York lawmakers are making it easier for crime victims to get money to help pay for expenses and recover from their losses. A bill, named after Matthew Horan, who died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2020, expands the eligibility to apply for victim compensation funds by removing the requirement that the victims report and provide evidence of a crime to law enforcement. The bill will also make drug testing resources, including kits that can detect fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, more readily available to the public.
This week, a federal judge blocked President Trump’s travel ban and ordered him to issue new guidelines on immigration screening at airports. A former lawyer at the firm Moses Singer LLP has settled with her former employer, alleging that she was fired after asking for work accommodations during pregnancy. Meanwhile, several law firms have boosted their pay for in-house legal leaders and other top staffers.
City laws and rules
This week, the Council adopted new law and rule changes reducing penalties, allowing opportunities to cure for certain violations, and adding requirements to license third-party food delivery services. It also amended existing laws regulating these services and repealed a subchapter in the Administrative Code that contains those laws. The City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) would be required to develop and implement a public education campaign on these laws, and DCWP and other City agencies would have the ability to deny or refuse to renew a license, suspend or revoke a license, or take other action against a licensed service if it committed two or more violations of this new subchapter.
